Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using ReceiptsLab ("the Service"), operated by ReceiptsLab ("we," "us," or "our"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not access or use the Service. We reserve the right to update these Terms at any time, and your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

2. Description of Service

ReceiptsLab is a receipt analytics platform that helps users track and analyze their spending across supported retailers. The Service is available in two tiers:

  • Free Tier: Client-side analytics with unlimited receipts stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB). No account required. Data never leaves your device. Includes the Overview dashboard, receipt import and parsing, and JSON data export.
  • Premium Tier: Cloud-based analytics with unlimited receipts, all 7 analytics dashboards (Overview, Trends, Items & Prices, Categories, Trips & Warehouses, Gas, Taxes & Rewards), cloud storage with cross-device access, and additional features. Requires an account and active subscription.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years of age to use the Service. If you are between 13 and 18 years of age, you must have parental or guardian consent to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that you meet these eligibility requirements.

4. Account Registration (Premium Tier)

Premium features require authentication via Google OAuth. When you create an account, you agree to provide accurate and current information. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and for all activities that occur under your account. You must notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account at [email protected].

5. User Responsibilities and Acceptable Use

You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. Specifically, you agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable law or regulation.
  • Import receipt data that does not belong to you or that you do not have authorization to analyze.
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise derive the source code of the Service.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems, other user accounts, or data not intended for you.
  • Use automated tools (bots, scrapers) to access the Service in a manner that exceeds reasonable use.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers or networks connected to the Service.
  • Upload malicious content, viruses, or any code designed to harm the Service or other users.
  • Use the Service to store or transmit content that is defamatory, obscene, or otherwise objectionable.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or engage in activity that we determine, in our sole discretion, to be harmful to the Service or other users.

6. Data Ownership

You retain full ownership of any receipt data you import to ReceiptsLab. We do not claim any intellectual property rights to your data. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to process your data solely for the purpose of providing the Service to you (e.g., computing analytics, storing data in our cloud infrastructure for Premium users). This license terminates when you delete your data or close your account.

You may export or delete your data at any time. Free tier data can be exported as JSON or cleared via browser settings. Premium users can export data and permanently delete their account and all associated data from the Settings page.

7. Intellectual Property

The Service, including its design, code, analytics algorithms, user interface, and documentation, is owned by ReceiptsLab and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. These Terms do not grant you any right to use our trademarks, logos, or brand features without prior written consent.

8. Premium Subscriptions and Billing

Premium subscriptions are available on a monthly ($1.99/month) or annual ($19.99/year) basis. All payments are processed securely by Stripe. By subscribing, you authorize recurring charges to your payment method at the applicable rate until you cancel.

  • Billing cycle: Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or annually).
  • Cancellation: You may cancel your subscription at any time via the Settings page or Stripe billing portal. Upon cancellation, you retain access to Premium features until the end of your current billing period.
  • Refunds: We do not provide refunds for partial billing periods. If you believe you were charged in error, contact us at [email protected] within 30 days of the charge.
  • Price changes: We reserve the right to change subscription prices with 30 days' notice via email. Existing subscribers will be notified before any price change takes effect.

9. Service Availability

We strive to maintain high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service. The Service may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, updates, or circumstances beyond our control. We will make reasonable efforts to provide advance notice of scheduled downtime.

Free tier data is stored in your browser and may be lost if you clear browser data, switch browsers, or reinstall your operating system. We recommend regular exports for backup. Premium tier data is stored in cloud infrastructure with regular backups, but we do not guarantee against all data loss scenarios.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, ReceiptsLab and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of the Service.

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that analytics calculations are error-free and you should not make financial decisions based solely on ReceiptsLab data without independent verification.

In no event shall our total liability exceed the amount you have paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless ReceiptsLab and its operators from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from or related to: (a) your use of the Service, (b) your violation of these Terms, (c) your violation of any third-party rights, or (d) any data you import to the Service.

12. Dispute Resolution

Any dispute arising from or relating to these Terms or the Service shall first be attempted to be resolved through good-faith negotiation by contacting us at [email protected]. If the dispute cannot be resolved within 30 days of written notice, either party may pursue binding arbitration or file a claim in the courts specified below.

13. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any legal action or proceeding arising under these Terms shall be brought exclusively in the federal or state courts located in the State of California, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in such courts.

14. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your access to the Service at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination shall survive, including but not limited to ownership provisions, warranty disclaimers, indemnification, and limitations of liability.

You may terminate your account at any time by deleting it from the Settings page. Account deletion permanently removes all your data from our systems.

15. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Material changes will be communicated via email to Premium users and by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree with the updated Terms, you must stop using the Service and delete your account.

16. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect. The invalid or unenforceable provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable.

17. Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and ReceiptsLab regarding the Service and supersede all prior agreements and understandings.
